GOLDRUSH

GOLDRUSH

Through this multi-media performance, DRIL invited visitors to experience the highs and lows as they gambled away their collective artist fee, one dollar at a time. In the lead up to the performance, DRIL prospected kiosks and corner stores, exchanging their artist fees for the always popular scratch & win game: GOLDRUSH

In a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the state of arts funding, GOLDRUSH drew humorous parallels between gambling, chance, and the psychology of the artist's approach when the odds are stacked against them. In a dark room, DRIL scratched ticket after ticket as a dubious act of blind faith in an attempt to beat the odds. Mimicking the camera angles of television gambling, a large screen allowed the audience to witness the live play by play action and outcome of each scratch & win, while the sound of their actions were amplified throughout the space.
